KNIGHTS OF
COLUMBUS |
|
The things that haven't been done before,
Those are the things to try:
Columbus dreamed of an unknown shore
At the rim of the far-flung sky.

A WORD ABOUT THE
VISION OF FR. MICHAEL McGIVNEY:

The image that appears
on the preceding
page was published and described in the October 2003 issue of Columbia,
the
monthly magazine of the Knights of Columbus. It was painted by
Antonella Cappuccio and was
commissioned in commemoration of the 113th. anniversary of the death of
Fr. Michael
McGivney, the founder of the Knights of Columbus in 1882. The black and
gold border is
copied from "The Knights of Columbus in Peace and War", published in
1920.
As described by Supreme Knight Carl A.
Anderson at the 121st.
Convention: "She has depicted Father McGivney the visionary. She shows
Father
McGivney paused in reflection after meditating on Scripture. His
thoughts are concerned
with his parish, St. Mary's, and with the young immigrant families he
has been called to
serve."
The photograph shown below shows Archbishop
Edwin O'Brien standing in front of a copy of the Vision of Fr. Michael
McGiveny. Archbishop O'Brien is currently the head of the Archdiocese
for the Military Services. During the late 1960s he was an associate
pastor at the Catholic Chapel of the Most Holy Trinity at West Point,
New York, which was my parish when I was a child.
